Union West is one of the largest recent apartment developments in the area. The two 17-story towers were built simultaneously, so we utilized a single tower crane, which meant substantial savings to the client. The south tower led the superstructure, with the north tower trailing behind.
Because it is situated in the West Loop, the site offered many challenges that Adjustable was able to overcome. Union West is flanked by structures to the northwest, southeast, and southwest, so we had to figure out how best to contain debris and distribute formwork material. In addition, we worked with the structural engineer to incorporate a thin foundation wall with reinforcing integrated within the ERS system. This allowed for a reduction in concrete material, increased space for underground parking, and a savings to the owner. Foundation wall framing was complicated due to the ERS system perimeter walers and variation in wall elevation. To ensure production during MEP underground activities, we used a combination of an A-Frame one sided wall form coupled with traditional welded tie formwork.
